Summer theater al fresco


or its 10th season, Summer Theatre of New Canaan has planned a selection of great Broadway musicals with family appeal. The 2013 Summer Theatre Festival under STONC’s open air tent in Waveny Park will feature South Pacific, the classic musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, set in an island paradise, June 15-July 13; Disney’s The Little Mermaid, June 15-Aug. 11; Grease, “the Original 50s Rock & Roll Musical,” July 20-Aug. 11; Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, June 29-Aug. 11; and Pinkalicious, The Musical, July 11-Aug. 11. The main shows are staged evenings, with theater seating under the tent, and some cabaret seating available. There’s also open field seating. Audience members are invited to arrive early and picnic in Waveny Park before the show or visit one of New Canaan’s many restaurants. Shows are rain or shine. The Summer Theatre Junior Company (for students entering 5th-8th grades) will be in session July 8-26, and will present Little Mermaid on July 26. STONC also has a high school apprentice program, June 24-July 19, and a college internship program.
